Chess tournament

Come to Beaufort chess tournament 10-15-11. The open section is very strong 2 players over 1000, 2 over 800, 2 0ver 700, and 5 over 600.

In the u600 section all players are under 500. Don't miss out on a great day of chess. Knight Invaders chess club.

Correction to prizes for Natl. Chess Day tournament

I just noticed that our TLA for the National Chess Day and Festival tournament in Charleston on 7-9, 2011, has an error. In the Under 1800 section for prizes, it should read "u1600 - $100" instead of "u1400 - $100". The under 1400 prize is, of course, in the Under 1400 section. Hope our "under 1600" players didn't reject pre-registering due to this error. We welcome you to join us!

GM's Shabalov and Ftacnik at the Queen City Chess Club!

On Thursday, Sept 1; one day in advance of the start of the NC Open, the Queen City Chess Club is hosting two of the players who will be in town. GM's Shabalov and Ftacnik are regular competitors on the international circuit and both have made their mark in chess theory, Shabalov among other things with his audacious g4 idea in the Semi Slav and Ftacnik as one of the world's great experts on the Grunfeld Defense. This is a special club night and will not replace our regular Tuesday night club, but will be in addition to it.

So on that Thursday night, the doors will open at 6:30 and the event will start at 7PM. We hope to wrap up about 9:30PM. The admission will be $10. I am excited about the format which will be a little different than the usual lecture/simul format we have used in the past. This time the players will be divided into teams and each team will have a GM captain. Each team will go into seperate parts of the building and a game will be played between the two teams. Players will have a chance in this more informal relaxed setting to interact with the GM's in a more direct way than usual....asking questions and just talking chess while the team discusses the postion.

Any and all are invited to attend. The address is the Asian Library in the King's Tower Building, 1339 Baxter St Charlotte NC 28024. We would love to have you in attendance!

Columbia Open - Games Online

Sixty six players are registered as of Friday evening in the Columbia Open. Games are being broadcast via DGT and Monroi.

The Open Section has the strongest field to appear in SC in quite some time led by a GM and 2 IM's.

You can still register onsite Sat morning to play.

Don't miss the SC Class Championships coming up on July 9 & 10 in Columbia! This tournament has Six Classes! Each class winner will receive a Championship Trophy! SIX trophies are up for grabs! Instead of a Sat night round there is a Blitz Tournament!

Plenty of action next weekend!
