North Carolina Open (NCO)

We would like to invite all our South Carolina chess-playing friends to join us for the North Carolina Open in Charlotte, NC over Labor Day weekend (Sept. 3-5). President Gary Newsom and I have committed to trying to turn the NCO into a major southeastern tournament, but we need the support of regional chess players to make it happen.

This year's tournament features a lower entry fee ($69 instead of $82), deeper prizes (10 deep in the Open, 8 deep in the sections), and guaranteed payouts NOT to be reduced based on number of players. The place prizes are 2-3 times higher than previous iterations of this tournament ($1,200 for Open 1st). The entire prize fund of $10,000 is completely guaranteed!

Check out the tournament flyer through the North Carolina Chess Association webpage ( http://www.ncchess.org ). If we can turn out enough players this year, we will be able to fund even larger prizes next year.

2010 World Open

One good thing that did result from this tournament was that I received an invite to attend an International( invitation only) Tournament for African-American Chess Players who have made unique contributions in the Art of Chess, to be held in New York City.

Isn't it great that some of our local state players have made the trip to play in the prestigious World Open. The only drawback is two had to play each other in the first round! I'm sure they'll both have that story to tell when they return.

Columbia Open - Aug 20 -22

The Columbia Open is coming up on Aug 20-22 and will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on Harbison again this year. Last year's tournament drew 64 players and we hope this year's will be even bigger!

Looking for chess coach

I'm writing for a friend who is a self-proclaimed techno-phobe (no email or internet) looking for one-on-one lessons in the Five-points area or downtown, or some mutually convenient location. Will pay for instruction. He says he is a beginner/novice player.

Any takers? Please give prices and times. My friend works early hours, 6 a.m to 3 p.m. and would love to meet with an instructor during late afternoon/early evenings or weekends. He does not drive but travels in a motorized wheelchair.

The Roots of Chess

" Archeological discoveries have brought to light chess pieces and boards found in tombs as old as the pre-dynastic period which dates back to about 4000 B.C. At King's College, London, in July, 1909, there was on display at the annual exhibition of the Egypt Exploration Fund a clay gaming board, measuring 7 inches by 2.5 inches, with 3 rows of 6 squares and eleven conicle pieces varying in height from one-half inch to one inch, taken from a pre-dynastic tomb at El-Mahasna, which lies eight miles north of Abydos. The tomb is presumed to have been the burial-place of a medicine man or magician.There have also been found in tombs of the Fifth Dynasty, about 3600-4000 B.C., paintings on which were depicted early inhabitants of Egypt playing at chess." From The Origins of Chess by Alfred L. Paul, the editor and publisher of The Western Chess Chronicle. Published in July 1939, Vol. 1, No. 9.

My research was inspired by the current World's Chess Champion's assertion that chess had it's origin in his native and beloved, India. I then re-called a Time-Life series, Sunrise to Power, that I had read in the sixties where there was a chess set in a tomb in Egypt.

NC Class Championship + National Open road trip

I'm taking a road trip from Charleston, SC up to Charlotte for the NC Class championship... then on to Vegas for the National Open. Looking to share expenses / driving time. My new wagon gets great gas mil age and i can get discounted hotel rooms.

Border Battle

Hello to all in SC. I want to take a minute and thank all of you guys on behalf of all of us North Carolinians who came to Travelers Rest to play at Border Battle this year. That was fun...too bad we didn't whoop your behinds like we did last year..
You squeaked out a tie. We'll make sure not to let that happen again (ha! ha!)

Special thanks to David Grimaud who puts in a lot of time and effort to make this thing happen. As all of us in NC know...David is "one of the good guys"

We're getting close to making this a tradition. Here's to hoping that we pull it off again next year...Gary
