TDs (and helpers) needed on April 10

Tournament Directors (and helpers) needed for 2nd Annual Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Open on April 10 (same date as Boarder Battle). Last years event was great fun for those of us who attended and this one can be even better.with help.

David Whatley has already done tremendous work for his annual USCF event. Adding an unrated section this year (for those not quite ready for rated play). Arranging for a local state senator to attend (and make the first more on board 1). Working with Jeff Smith to loan his MonRoi equipment to broadcast some games on the Internet.

This is good opportunity for club TDs to gain experience in a small tournament and a great opportunity for anyone to demonstrate their support for scholastic chess. Please encourage other possible candidates to help David continue his good work. Your move.

It's easy to establish a relationship with schools to grow scholastic chess. However, you may need to wear'em down with tenacious follow-through "build it an they will come"

Dr. Johnson,

Lary Davis and I met with you last year at Merrywood about establishing more organized chess in your schools. I'm resolved to try again and find a few teachers (or parents) willing to sponsor their schools student chess club. I hope youll again help.

Please pass along the attached flier for posting/display in all your schools. Its intended to peak the interest in chess and uncover those interested in establishing chess in their school. The value of chess is well researched and documented, but the key is finding sponsors to help the kids get started. Im willing to do whatever I can.

Once the organizing of chess club(s) begins, Ill ensure the Index-Journal reports the effort. Additionally, I fully expect school chess teams to evolve and compete in local and state scholastic tournaments. The Internet has enabled distant schools across South Carolina to eliminate cost of travel by competing via on-line tournaments and I sincerely hope elementary, middle and high schools within District 50 can be included.

Ill gladly meet with you or anyone you prefer and provide additional information or clarification.

Pay it forward...

Each year leading up to the SCCA premier scholastic event (Saturday March 6) Im reminded of how far we yet have to go to add more quantity and quality to South Carolina Scholastic Chess. With more hands to lighten the load, our Scholastic Championships could truly be THE annual destination event in the southeast.

I appeal to each adult player to accept a more active part of growing scholastic chess in South Carolina. Why not make a move? Time trouble? In your early chess, I suspect there was someone making time for you. Perhaps youll decide now it is your time to be there.

Whats needed? Your direct participation is needed with students at school chess clubs and scholastic events. To avoid the no one asked me, pick an opportunity or create one. A simple question of how can I help? or perhaps the encouragement of another is a beginning.

Community clubs can help too! Perhaps by sponsoring a school club or organizing a scholastic event. Identifying or volunteering to be a club scholastic contact is always good too. As organizers know, every effort always is short of TLC (time, labor, cash). In scholastic chess, its time to teach younger playerslabor to organize school clubs or small tournamentscash for administration, equipment and events.

One last consideration. Remember and honor those who came before us. Their names may be unheralded, but their efforts have provided us what we have today. What will be our legacy to those who come after us?

It can be much more than a game. Your move.

5th Patrick D. Hart Memorial Scholatic

It seems only yesterday that we had the idea to hold a special scholastic tournament in honor of Pat Hart. Now, we will be holding the 5th edition this Saturday, Jan. 23rd, in Charleston. Pat played a huge supportive role in both the Charleston Chess Club and the SCCA, serving as Treasurer of both organizations. To follow in his footsteps is a huge honor and all of us at the Charleston Chess Club are proud to hold a tournament in tribute to his hard work and dedication. We hope that all scholastic players in the area try to attend one of our annual events. We hold the PHM (as it is affectionately called) in the same tournament room as the Snowstorm Special (coming up in February), so the atmosphere is the same as a regular weekend tournament. The PHM this year is now part of the Chess Adventures S.C. Grand Prix and we thank NCCA president, Gary Newsom, for his generosity including it in the grand prix schedule. Again, we hope many of our scholastic players can attend. Charleston is having nice weather this week, so come on down and join us.
